From their origins in the Mediterranean and Middle East regions, flowering bulbs have been prized in many countries for over 500 years. Through hybridizing, varieties of bulbs were crossed to produce unique colors, height, texture and hardiness over centuries. As new varieties become available, many others become difficult or impossible to find. For those who are recreating period gardens for periods reaching back from 1940 to the 1500's, finding period bulbs can be a challenge in creating an 'authentic' garden.
Scott Kunst, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, has spent years researching and speaking on garden design practices of the last
few centuries, and learned much about bulbs in the process. While working as a teacher, he started the business
Old House Gardens, with a committment to authenticity. In brief, Scott's aim was to be a source for heirloom
bulbs, verifying these antique varieties through research, trial gardens, and establishing relationships with
proven sources. In the last six years, Scott's reputation has caused his business to grow, so that teaching
has given way to the responsibility of being America's only source devoted to antique bulbs.
Followers of
Old House Gardens have seen an increase
in varieties and bulb types with each annual catalog.
The catalog is a joy to read, with Scott's comments on history and sources for each bulb accented by illustrations from
catalogs of the last century. Articles in leading home and garden magazines point out Scott's mastery of a
niche market and an occupation which brings him joy.
Couleur Cardinal (circa 1845), an excellent
tulip for gardens or indoor forcing, is
carried in the OHG catalog.
