GardenScape - The First Seven Years
by Duane Reid
1999 marks the eighth year for GardenScape, Rochester's flower
and garden show held in Henrietta's Dome Center.
This event has developed over the years as a showcase of plants,
garden design, and related services. We are taking this opportunity
to look back on scenes from the past years and reflect on the pleasures
of attending the show.

GardenScape allows you to walk an early pathway into Spring. |
On our stroll we see the textures of stone, the colors of blooms....
We are beckoned to go through the passage, to another beautiful scene.
As we see the many bulbs and shrubs coaxed to bloom in the Monroe County greenhouses,
we ask "Is May really 2 months away"?
The May pole wouldn't lie...
This show is
sponsored by the Genesee Finger Lakes Nursery and Landscape Association,
a non-profit organization whose proceeds from the show go to support
the association's many educational and public service efforts.
This show demonstrates the varied skills of the professionals in
the 'green industry', whether they design the beautiful vistas, or provide
the plant materials to accomplish them.
But this is not simply a flower show. We see plants not in
isolation, but gardens in their places around structures.
You can see more than 50 landscaped gardens, displays, and exhibits with
everything from Japanese Gardens to peaceful waterfalls and gazebos.
A walkway invites us to tour the garden, and get a shady cover from
a summer sun. All the while, we jot down names of new "favorites"
discovered on the way.
We encounter water features both simple and elaborate. |
A true family event, GardenScape has instituted a children's area, with clever themes,
hands on activities, and the interactive children's garden.
There are always vendors of plants, seeds, garden tools, containers and crafts.
As you leave GardenScape, you're on the pathway to a beautiful landscape
of your own! |
Special thanks to Genesee-Finger Lakes Nursery and Landscape Association.
